Waste Management's chief executive, Jim Fish, is retiring early next year after a more than a decade at the helm of the provider of waste management environmental services.

Waste Management on Wednesday said John Morris, who currently serves as president of the Houston company, will take on the additional post of CEO on Jan. 4, 2027.

Fish, who joined Waste Management in 2001 and has been CEO and a director since 2016, also will step down from the board, while Morris will join the board, the company said.

Morris, 57 years old, joined Waste Management in 1994 and assumed the post of president from Fish last year.

Raymond James analysts said they believe Waste Management's CEO transition is a logical succession and should help continue the company's momentum as its core business continues to improve, sustainability investments begin maturing, and the company continues to integrate Stericycle, acquired in 2024.

The analysts said the handoff was well-telegraphed, given Morris's appointment to president last year and the promotion of Tara Hemmer to chief operating officer in May.

Waste Management said it expects Fish will continue to serve in an advisory role until mid-February.
